Midlothian Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) Project - Allegany County

AMD collects in the front yard of an old school house in Midlothian, Maryland.  The discharge originates from underground seeps from abandoned coal mines.  The AMD ultimately flows through a storm runoff drain into Winebrenner Run which in turn empties into Georges Creek.

High concentrations of dissolved metals and acidity have degraded the aesthetic and recreational value of the stream as well as the biological health of the area.  This project began in FY2005 with the completion of the design of a treatment system and the solicitation of construction bids for building treatment beds using Pyrolucite® technology.  The system will use naturally occurring ground bacteria to interact with limestone to neutralize the pH of acidic water discharged from the mine.  The system will also remove much of the iron contained in the water..  The WMRC&D partners on the project are the Maryland Bureau of Mines and the Office of Surface Mining.
