Hoyes Run Stream Stabilization Project - Garrett County

Hoyes Run is a natural trout stream located near McHenry, Maryland .  It is part of the Youghiogheny Watershed.  Since the mid-1990s, Maryland Fisheries biologists began observing declines in the trout population in the stream.  In 2000, it was recognized that the stream was losing water, though the streambed and that during periods of low flow, the stream actually went dry.  The State working with the U.S. Department of Energy, which provided geophysical tests and Western Maryland RC&D, it was determined that solution cavities under the limestone streambed created a pathway for the water loss.

The stretch of the stream suffering the water loss flows adjacent to a limestone quarry.  It was determined that the water loss flowed into the quarry pit.

The Western Maryland RC&D contracted a specialist in stream sealing to inject polyurethane grout into the cracks in the stream bed.  The project was highly successful.  The stream flow was restored and the quantity of water pumped by the quarry reduced significantly.

The project was completed during the  Summer of 2003.
